Green Pool? Here's How Long Cleanup Really Takes

A realistic timeline for algae remediation, why draining is usually the wrong move, and what makes cleanup take longer.
Three to five days for most pools
Clearing a green pool is limited by filtration, not by chemicals. Shock kills the algae quickly, but the dead algae still has to physically pass through your filter. That takes multiple 24-hour circulation cycles with repeated filter cleaning in between.
What makes it take longer
Black algae roots into plaster and needs mechanical brushing plus repeated treatment. An undersized or failing filter drags out every cycle. Very high cyanuric acid levels blunt your chlorine so nothing you add works properly. And a pool full of leaves and sediment has to be vacuumed to waste before chemistry can even start.
Why draining is usually wrong
Draining feels faster but risks liner shrinkage and, with a high water table, can float the shell of a fiberglass or concrete pool. We only recommend draining when chemistry genuinely cannot be corrected — most often extreme stabilizer levels.
Preventing the repeat
Green pools almost always come back to circulation, filtration or a missed stabilizer reading. After cleanup we identify the root cause and fix that, because otherwise you are paying for remediation again next season.
