Salt pools are not chlorine-free. Here's what actually changes in cost, upkeep and equipment life.
Salt pools are chlorine pools
A salt chlorine generator makes chlorine from dissolved salt through electrolysis. The sanitizer is the same; only the delivery method differs. What changes is that production is steady and automated instead of dosed manually.
Day-to-day upkeep
Salt systems reduce chemical handling, but they raise pH steadily, so acid demand goes up. Cells need periodic inspection and acid cleaning to remove calcium scale, and salt levels need to be checked and topped up, particularly after heavy rain or a partial drain.
Equipment considerations
Cells are consumables. Most last three to seven years depending on run time and water balance, and replacement is a meaningful cost to plan for. Salt is also harder on some stone coping, ladders and metal fixtures, so rinsing surfaces matters.
Which is right for you
Salt is excellent for swimmer comfort and consistency. Traditional chlorine has lower up-front cost and simpler equipment. Either works well with a consistent service schedule — the maintenance routine matters far more than the sanitizer type.
